Hotel Adler

A careful renovation of the historic Hotel Adler in Niederdorf that balances tradition and modernity through a refined use of light, color, and material clarity.

In 2016, Studio raumwerk undertook the renovation and expansion of the first and second floors of the Hotel Adler, a historic inn located in the heart of Niederdorf. The project represents a respectful yet contemporary approach to hospitality design—honoring the character of the original structure while enhancing it with new spatial quality and material richness.

At the core of the intervention is a strategic use of color and light. Carefully curated tones create visual rhythm and atmosphere, while lighting is used not only functionally but to accentuate architectural features and material textures. The result is a composition that feels timeless—neither overly historicized nor overtly modern.

Traditional materials such as wood, fabric, and natural finishes are retained, but reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. Details are simplified, proportions sharpened, and transitions between old and new are resolved with quiet elegance. This sensibility gives the interiors a clarity and calmness that invites guests to feel both grounded and cared for.

Functionality and comfort have been significantly improved through spatial reorganization and careful layering of elements. Each room becomes a subtle interplay of heritage and restraint, offering warmth without excess and atmosphere without spectacle.

Hotel Adler stands as a refined example of how hospitality spaces in historic buildings can be renewed without erasing their identity. The project strengthens the presence of the inn within the village—quietly anchoring tradition in the present and offering a welcoming retreat shaped by light, color, and care.
